It’s hard to believe it, but some of the biggest news of the year is the legendary Toyota Camry moving to a hybrid-only powertrain. With over 40 years in the American market, at times the Camry has sold close to 500,000 units a year! It’s long been one of the most popular midsize sedans on the market.

Now, the Camry features a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. Combined, these provide 225 net horsepower – a number that increases to 232 HP in the all-wheel drive version. Drive Mode Select provides modes including sport and EV Mode, which allows the Camry to operate solely on battery power at low speeds, for short distances. All of this combines to help the Camry achieve a fuel economy of 53 miles per gallon in the city and 50 MPG on the highway, for a combined 51 MPG.

Combining good use of a small footprint and efficiency at a low entry level price, the Toyota Corolla and the Corolla Hatchback are peak practicality. Underneath the hood is a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 169 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission. Carrying over from 2024, it gets up to 32 MPG city and 41 MPG highway. Hybrid versions of the Corolla have 53 MPG city and 46 MPG highway and are available with all-wheel drive as well – a rarity for a compact car. These models have 51 MPG city and 46 mpg highway. The base Corolla Hatchback meanwhile gets 32 MPG city and 41 MPG highway, the XSE version gets 30 MPG city and 38 MPG highway.

Demonstrating that luxury can come with fuel-efficiency, the 2025 Toyota Crown is the king of the Toyota sedan line-up. Featuring a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine combined with front and rear electric motors, the hybrid system is all-wheel drive and offers a net of 236 horsepower along with 238 lb-ft of combined torque. At the same time, it gets 42 MPG city and 41 MPG highway, for 41 MPG combined.

With compact SUVs being so popular, we’d be remiss not to highlight the Toyota RAV4’s fuel economy. The RAV4 Prime gets excellent MPGe with its plug-in charging, but that’s cheating. Comparing apples to apples, the RAV4 hybrid versions still get incredible fuel efficiency for an all-wheel drive SUV capable of carrying up to five passengers or up to 69.8 cubic feet of cargo. With a 2.5-liter engine paired with front and rear electric motors, there is 219 horsepower on tap. This provides for up to 41 MPG city and 38 MPG highway, for 39 MPG combined
